LEGO Horizon Adventures: A Family-Friendly Blockbuster
In a delightful twist, LEGO Horizon Adventures allows fans to re-experience Aloy’s journey from Horizon Zero Dawn through LEGO’s iconic lens. Set to release on November 14 for PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC, this charming reimagining offers solo play and online or couch co-op, bringing the Horizon universe to LEGO fans of all ages.
A Visual Treat for LEGO Fans
The last LEGO Star Wars game raised the bar with its visuals, but LEGO Horizon Adventures goes a step further by building every aspect of its world, down to the smallest detail, in LEGO bricks. From Rost’s beard to intricate machine creatures and even LEGO-rendered water, the game spares no effort in creating an authentic LEGO world, making it a true visual treat.
Humor and Storytelling with Classic LEGO Charm
One of the hallmarks of every LEGO game is its humor, and LEGO Horizon Adventures delivers. Reinterpreting Horizon Zero Dawn’s narrative with a lighthearted approach, the game’s cutscenes and dialogues bring a smile to players’ faces. An engaging narrator, reminiscent of a storybook, keeps the storytelling vibrant and fun. Fans of the original will also appreciate the authentic voice acting, featuring Aloy’s original voice actress, Julia Casper, adding an extra layer of immersion.
Gameplay Crafted for All Ages
LEGO Horizon Adventures offers accessible gameplay, designed for families to enjoy together. With five difficulty settings, players can adjust the game’s challenge level, and even toggle off damage entirely for a more relaxed experience. In terms of combat, Aloy wields her signature bow and focus ability to target specific weak points on machine enemies. Players can boost arrow damage by shooting through fire or electric fields, adding a bit of strategic depth.
In addition, various gadgets add diversity to the gameplay. Early missions introduce items like a fan bow that fires multiple arrows at once, and boots enabling double jumps and heavy damage in melee. Gadgets require charging, found in chests throughout the world, adding an element of exploration and resource management.
Despite this solid foundation, the absence of an evasion roll might feel unusual to Horizon fans. Similarly, the lack of Aloy’s iconic spear at the start results in a combat style focused solely on ranged attacks, which could feel restrictive. Additionally, missions can feel repetitive, as players cycle through collecting bricks, platforming, and fighting enemies in arenas. It remains to be seen if the gameplay loop can sustain interest over the entire campaign.
Building, Collecting, and Customizing in Mother’s Heart
As with any LEGO game, collecting is a big part of the fun. In LEGO Horizon Adventures, players gather bricks to unlock costumes, decorate the Mother’s Heart hub area, and activate perks. These perks, such as increased XP or fire damage, add an element of customization to Aloy’s abilities, especially useful on higher difficulty levels.
